Star Citizen Starter Pack 2026

Cheapest pack: Citizen Starter Pack — $45 USD

Roberts Space Industries restructured the entire starter lineup in March 2026. The Aurora MR is gone. The Mustang Alpha is no longer a starter pack ship. What changed in March 2026?

On March 25, 2026, RSI replaced the Mustang Alpha in the Citizen Starter Pack with the RSI Aurora MkII. The Aurora MR Starter Pack was already retired on May 29, 2025. The Aurora MkII is the first ship to ship with RSI's new Gold Standard modular system — you can buy a $12 Transport module to add 6 SCU cargo or a $12 Defense module to add missiles and stronger shields.

Which Star Citizen starter pack should you buy?

Pick by the kind of play you want to do first. You can upgrade any starter pack later using RSI's CCU system, so the first choice is not permanent — but it does shape your first 20 hours.

Citizen Starter Pack

$45 · Aurora MkII

If you are new and budget-conscious. Has a bed for field log-off and a modular cargo bay. Cheapest way to find out whether Star Citizen suits you.

DefenseCon Starter Pack

$60 · Drake Cutter (limited)

Tied to the DefenseCon 2956 event window. Cutter includes living quarters and light cargo at the lowest-price tier that still feels like a complete ship.

Duelist Starter Pack

$75 · Avenger Titan

For solo players who want to fight, deliver cargo, and bounty hunt without immediately upgrading. The Avenger Titan has 8 SCU internal cargo and a Size 4 nose weapon mount — strongest combat starter.

Hauler Starter Pack

$80 · Crusader Intrepid

For trading and cargo focus. The Intrepid has enough fuel to make the jump to Pyro on stock — useful for anyone wanting to play the dangerous frontier system right away.

Drake Miner Starter Pack

$75 · Drake Golem

For mining-curious players. The Golem is an accessible deep-space miner. Mining is a slower money loop than bounty hunting but is meditative and reliable.

Privateer Starter Pack

$125 · Cutlass Black

The premium option. The Cutlass Black is widely considered the best all-round multi-crew ship in the game — 4-person crew capacity, 46 SCU cargo, strong weapons. Worth the premium if you know you want a group ship.

The $40 qualification rule — what you need to know

Roberts Space Industries' referral program has one rule that almost no other page mentions. Worth understanding before you click buy.

⚠ Your Game Package must be $40 or more — and paid with real money

Direct from the official RSI Referral Program FAQ: "Whenever one of your recruits becomes an active player by obtaining a Game Package and spends a minimum value of $40 USD on the Pledge Store, you will get a Recruitment Point. Purchases and pledges made with store credit do not count toward this total."

Practical impact for you, the new player: the 50,000 UEC bonus only triggers if your starter pack costs at least $40 USD ex-VAT, paid with a real payment method. Every current starter pack ($45 and up) clears this comfortably. The trap is only real if:

1. A sale drops a pack below $40 (rare). 2. You pay with store credit (it does not count). 3. You receive the pack as a gift (it does not count).

The VAT note for European buyers

RSI displays VAT-inclusive prices on the pledge store for EU and UK customers. In Denmark with 25% VAT, the Citizen Starter Pack at $45 USD ex-VAT shows as approximately $56.25 at checkout. The $40 threshold is measured against the USD ex-VAT base — not the VAT-inclusive total — so your $56 invoice still qualifies for the referral bonus.

How to claim 50,000 UEC on your starter pack

Two ways to claim the 50,000 UEC bonus on whichever starter pack you pick. Both take under a minute.

Option A — One-click (easiest)

Click this signup link — it opens the official RSI registration page with STAR-JTV7-FXLR already filled into the Referral Rewards field. Create your account, then go to the pledge store and pick your starter pack.

Option B — Manual

Go to robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist, fill in your account details, paste STAR-JTV7-FXLR into the Referral Rewards field, and submit. Then visit the pledge store and pick your pack.

Already created your account?

You have 24 hours after signup to add the code retroactively. This grace period is new — RSI added it on July 2, 2025. Log in, open Account → Referral Program, paste STAR-JTV7-FXLR, and confirm. After 24 hours the field disappears permanently.

Game Package vs Starter Pack — what's the difference?

RSI uses both terms. Here is what they actually mean.

Every starter pack is a game package. Not every game package is a starter pack. A $200 Constellation bundle is a game package but not a starter pack.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Star Citizen starter pack in 2026?
The Citizen Starter Pack at $45 USD (promotional, $60 base) is the cheapest entry. It includes the RSI Aurora MkII, 10,000 UEC, 6-month insurance, and full Star Citizen game access. Adding referral code STAR-JTV7-FXLR at signup grants an additional 50,000 UEC of in-game currency for free.
Is the Mustang Alpha still a Star Citizen starter pack in 2026?
No. On March 25, 2026, RSI replaced the Mustang Alpha in the Citizen Starter Pack with the RSI Aurora MkII. The Mustang Alpha is still available as a standalone ship at $45 USD but no longer includes game access by itself. If you want a Mustang Alpha and game access, you now need to buy a starter pack (Aurora MkII) and the Mustang separately.
Does Squadron 42 come with a Star Citizen starter pack?
No. Squadron 42 is a separate single-player campaign sold as its own product or as a +SQ42 bundle. The standard starter packs include Star Citizen game access only. Squadron 42 has a targeted late-2026 release per Chris Roberts (May 2026: "plan is end of 2026, can't 100% guarantee it").
Which Star Citizen starter pack is best for new players?
For absolute beginners on a budget, the Citizen Starter Pack ($45) with the Aurora MkII is the safest choice — modular cargo bay, bed for field log-off, cheapest entry. For combat-focused players who want more out of the box, the Duelist Starter Pack ($75) with the Avenger Titan adds 8 SCU internal cargo and a Size 4 nose weapon mount. For multi-crew or group play, the Privateer Starter Pack ($125) with the Cutlass Black is the most flexible.
Does the $40 referral rule apply if a starter pack is on sale?
Yes. RSI's rule is that the new account must spend at least $40 USD ex-VAT on a Game Package for the referrer to earn a Recruitment Point. If a sale brings a pack below $40 — which is rare — the referral does not qualify. All current starter packs cost $45 or more, so this almost never matters in practice.
Can I use store credit to buy a Star Citizen starter pack?
You can buy most pledges with store credit, but purchases made with store credit do not count toward the $40 referral threshold. If you are signing up for the first time using referral code STAR-JTV7-FXLR, pay with a real payment method to ensure both the 50,000 UEC bonus and the referrer's Recruitment Point both register.
What's the difference between a Game Package and a Starter Pack?
"Game Package" is RSI's category label for any pledge that includes Star Citizen game access. "Starter Pack" is the product-name convention RSI uses for role-focused entry-level Game Packages — Citizen, Duelist, Privateer, Hauler, Salvager, Miner, Outsider. Every starter pack is a game package, but not every game package is named a starter pack.
How does VAT affect the price in Europe?
RSI displays VAT-inclusive prices on the pledge store for EU and UK customers. In Denmark with 25% VAT, the Citizen Starter Pack at $45 USD ex-VAT becomes approximately $56.25 at checkout. The $40 referral threshold is measured against the USD ex-VAT base — not the VAT-inclusive total — so your invoice with VAT still qualifies for the bonus.
Can I upgrade my starter pack ship later?
Yes. RSI's CCU (Cross-Chassis Upgrade) system lets you apply the value of any starter pack ship toward upgrading to a larger or different ship. The starter pack itself is not a permanent ceiling — it is your entry point. Many players buy the cheapest Citizen Starter Pack at $45 and CCU into something bigger over time.
Is there a Star Citizen starter pack on Steam?
No. Star Citizen is not on Steam, Epic Games Store, or any other storefront. The only place to buy a starter pack is the official Roberts Space Industries pledge store at robertsspaceindustries.com.
